Using the chaos of the World Cup competition as their cover, a crew of crackerjack bank robbers scheme to steal millions of pounds in used bank notes from a London bank before the cold hard cash is incinerated as scheduled. After checking in early for a flight to Germany in order to establish their alibi, the thieves quickly sneak out to the airport parking lot, pile into a van, and stealthily drive towards their target. Their plan to smash the van into the building and grab the cash before catching their flight goes suddenly awry, however, when a member of the gang is badly injured in the crash. With the clock counting down before their flight takes to the sky, the group is soon forced to alter their plan as police attempt to negotiate with the crew through the crumpled van. The negotiations are quickly staled when the robbers refuse to negotiate, leaving the police with no other choice than to hatch a plan to storm the bank. When the police do finally gain entry into the bank, the sight they find leaves even the most sharp-minded law enforcer hopelessly speechless.

A natural disaster breeds man-made treachery in this suspense thriller. Severe flooding threatens an Indiana town after a massive rainstorm taxes dams to the breaking point. As part of an emergency evacuation effort, armored car driver Tom (Christian Slater) and his uncle Charlie (Edward Asner) are recruited to collect cash from the town’s banks and drive it to safety. However, a gang of thieves led by Jim (Morgan Freeman) plan to lay siege to the truck and steal the $3 million on board. After Jim attempts to ambush the truck, Tom hides the cash and reports the attempted theft to the local sheriff (Randy Quaid). However, the sheriff’s lack of honesty soon becomes apparent; he puts Tom in a lockup and sets out to take the money for himself. As the flood waters rise, Tom has to escape from jail if he is to save both the townspeople’s savings and his own life. Meanwhile, Jim and the sheriff are locked in a race to see who can find the $3 million first. Minnie Driver, Richard A. Dysart, and Betty White highlight Hard Rain’s supporting cast.

The director of Mortal Kombat (1995) adapts another popular video game for the big screen with this gory action thriller. Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez star as Alice and Rain, two members of a commando team assigned to infiltrate the Hive, an underground research laboratory owned by the faceless conglomerate known as the Umbrella Corporation. A bio-engineered virus has been released into the maze-like Hive, turning the facility’s employees into mindless, flesh-eating zombies. A single scratch or bite from one of these rampaging ghouls dooms its victim, so the commandos have their work cut out for them as they attempt to reach the Red Queen, the lab’s supercomputer — and their sole hope of halting the spread of the contagion. Before they can complete their mission, however, the soldiers must overcome a variety of deadly obstacles, including mutant dogs, lasers, and a genetically altered beast known as The Licker, whose strength increases with every victim it slays. Alice and Rain also discover that the release of the virus may not have been an accident, and that a cure may exist somewhere in the deadly Hive. Resident Evil co-stars Eric Mabius, James Purefoy, Martin Crewes, and Colin Salmon.

A young boy joins a group of renegade dwarves on an unpredictable journey through time in this humorous fantasy. Monty Python animator Terry Gilliam mostly achieves a tricky balancing act in his second feature as sole director, creating a dark, irreverent comedy disguised as a family adventure. Particularly amusing are the boy’s encounters with various historical figures, including an entertainment-starved Napoleon (Ian Holm), a powerful Agamemnon (Sean Connery), and a surprisingly stuffy Robin Hood, embodied by Gilliam’s Python cohort John Cleese. Episodic by nature, the film is less successful when dealing with the larger narrative, which concerns the pursuit of the dwarves and their time-traveling map by the Supreme Being. However, the combination of Gilliam’s visual exuberance and the witty script (by Gilliam and Michael Palin) ensures an entertaining, if erratic, journey.

First-time feature filmmaker Jim Threapleton takes inspiration from the case of a Canadian citizen who was imprisoned and tortured in Syria for an entire year to tell this tale of a man who is abducted on the streets of London and placed into a nightmare world of seemingly endless solitary confinement. Zaafir Ahmadi (Omar Berdouni) is a UK citizen of Moroccan descent. One day, after being confronted by authorities in a local warehouse, Zaafir is approached on the street by an intimidating gang of thugs. Before he knows what has happened Zaafir has been drugged, transported to an unknown destination, and placed in a sea container for holding. Now alone in a world where nothing is as it seems, the frightened prisoner soon finds his thoughts drifting back to the days spent with his beautiful wife Ewa (Ania Sowinski) and teaching college courses on democracy and the origins of terrorism. But this is only the beginning of Zaafir’s suffering, because upon arriving in an unspecified Mideast country he is interrogated by the vicious Maro (Andy Serkis), who accuses the prisoner of providing financial aid to radical Islam. Subsequently tortured in hopes that he will provide a confession, Zaafir is eventually released back onto the London streets, but remains so scarred by his experience that he cannot even communicate with his sympathetic wife.
